The Brief

Marcellin College sought to transition from a traditional timetable and curriculum model to a future-focused learning framework called Polaris, a digital-first ecosystem that would marry Marist values with personalised learning, agile pedagogy, and a supportive school culture.

The goal was to craft a modular, visually engaging document that communicates the new educational vision to students, parents, staff, and external partners.

The Problem

  • Complex transformation Polaris wasn’t just a new course structure, it represented a reimagining of the school’s identity: from static curriculum to a holistic, character-driven approach.

  • Diverse audience: Stakeholders ranged from students and parents to staff and broader community audiences, all needing clarity and both strategic depth and approachable tone.

  • Need for coherence and clarity: Detailed stages (Breadth, Depth, Pathways) needed to be communicated visually in a way that made progression and choice clear and compelling.

Modular document structure

  • Defined clear “stages” of the learning ecosystem – Breadth → Depth → Pathways, with consistent icons and colour codes for each.

  • Included quick-reference visual frameworks outlining course flow, personal learning plans, and the role of Flexi periods.

Visual hierarchy & clarity

  • Used bespoke infographics to communicate complex figures in a simplistic manner.

  • Highlighted DRUb (Understanding by Design) processes and linking rubrics via a clear step-by-step layout .

Audience-specific

  • Balanced accessibility with authority: full explanations for teachers and parents; overviews and visuals for students.

  • Paired narratives and role descriptions (e.g., Deputy Principal as “social architect” of Polaris) for context and credibility

The Impact

Adoption & engagement: Polaris became the standard induction reference for 2020 Year 7 parents and students.

Staff alignment: Professional learning sessions leveraged the document as a framework to scaffold teaching innovation and goal setting.

Brand & recruitment: Used strategically in open evenings, promotional materials, and the school website to showcase Marcellin’s progressive ethos and attract prospective families.

Reflection

Designing Polaris and setting the creative direction was about translating educational innovation into a shared visual language.

The challenge was balancing high-level strategic thinking with granular details, all while maintaining a tone that was inspiring and inclusive. The final product shaped a school culture.
